Jill C. Underhill, PhD

President & Co-founder

Dr. Jill Underhill is a Professor of Communication Studies at Marshall University and the current Board President of CARES. Her son Riley was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD; Level 3) at age 2. Through intensive, early-intervention ABA therapy from Bright Futures Learning Services (BFLS), Riley progressed from a 2-year-old with the communication ability of a 6-month-old to being a mainstreamed elementary school student. After seeing the transformative potential of early intervention and continued ABA therapy in her son’s life, Jill worked with BFLS and a community of parents to co-found CARES in 2017 to increase access to services and community for children on the autism spectrum and their families living in southern West Virginia. Jill also serves on the Accreditation Committee for the Autism Commission for Quality, the West Virginia Autism Training Center Advisory Board, and is the faculty co-advisor of the Marshall University Neurodiversity Alliance. She was also recently diagnosed with ADHD and ASD (Level 1) and is passionate about increasing access to screening and diagnosis for girls and women.
